The building, updating, expanding or modifying websites, systems, or applications need a huge number of work items so that you can deliver before anticipating overall goal achievement. In that case, you need to use an issue tracker because it is the key ingredient for success.

What are Issues in Redmine

Issues are among the most essential and common items in Redmine. You can add an issue to a specified project. To create issues within a project, you need permissions. Permissions can be managed from Administration > Roles and permissions.

Creating an Issue in Redmine

First, let's get acquainted with the fields that you can find in the creation form:

  • With the tracker, you can define the type of the issue.
  • In the subject, you can type the name of the issue that you are creating. The description is for writing a resume of the issue.
  • If you are making a new issue, you need to set the status to New. However, you can update the status of the issue later on.
  • You can set the priority to Immediate, Urgent, High, Normal, and Low. If you are an administrator, you can modify the level of priority at Administration > Enumerations.
  • You can assign the issue to a user or a group of users from the assignee.
  • If you have checked on private, then only limited project members or users can view the issue. The members who can view are watchers, assignees, project managers, administrators, and author.
  • With the parent task, you can make the current issue, subtask of another issue, making that issue as a parent issue.
  • In watchers, you can select more project members who will receive e-mail notifications and are able to follow the issue.

If you want to create a new issue, you should follow the below steps:

Conclusion

It is hard to decide whether Redmine is project management software or an issue tracker. Normally, a good issue tracker should include some features of project management. In Redmine, both of these components combine flawlessly. Redmine, as an issue tracker, can also support these important features such as filters, custom fields, commenting, subscribing, subtasks, and priorities.
